Their story, leadership, and commitment to justice through Embers International embody the spirit of Generous Life. Together, they will offer a powerful call to live generously—with beauty, purpose, and conviction. Their presence will be a gift to our community and a catalyst for deeper engagement with the work of Embers.
Haejin Shim Fujimura is a seasoned attorney with 20 years of experience and serves as outside General Counsel and legal strategist for nonprofit organizations as well as forprofit companies, ranging from startups to publicly traded companies. She is the principal of the law firm Shim & Associates, P.C. based in New York and New Jersey.
Haejin also has extensive experience litigating various civil lawsuits in both federal and states courts. Based on her successful record of resolving hundreds of disputes, Haejin has helped her clients develop stronger and healthier processes and structures for their governance and operations so that they can move from reactive, inefficient, and unhealthy organizations to proactive, thriving, and healthy organizations.
Haejin is actively involved in the legal and nonprofit communities. She has served on the board of trustees of reputable organizations collectively for over 30 years. She is a frequent speaker on the theme of the integration of faith and work, beauty and justice, and whole person care.
In addition, Haejin is the CEO and a co-founder of Embers International, a global NGO protecting, restoring, and empowering the victims of injustice to end intergenerational exploitation and prevent human trafficking for the vulnerable groups, including the children born into brothels. She has been involved in various anti-trafficking efforts for decades, including International Justice Mission.
Haejin is the founder of the Estuary, a space of cultural ecosystem confluence of for-profit and nonprofit, of law, art, faith, and humanity. The Estuary incubates Shim & Associates, Embers International, Culture Care Creative, Academy Kintsugi, and IAMCultureCare.

Makoto Fujimura is a leading contemporary artist whose work has been featured in galleries and museums around the world, including The Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, The Huntington Library, the Tikotin Museum, Belvedere Museum, C3M North Bund Art Museum, and Pola Museum. His process-driven, refractive “slow art” has been described by David Brooks of The New York Times as “a small rebellion against the quickening of time.”
Fujimura is the author of five books: Art Is: A Journey Into the Light (Yale University Press, forthcoming October 2025), Art+Faith: A Theology of Making, Silence and Beauty, Refractions, and Culture Care. He is also the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2023 Kuyper Prize for Excellence in Reformed Theology and Public Life and the American Academy of Religion’s 2014 Religion and the Arts award. From 2003 to 2009, he served as a Presidential appointee to the National Council on the Arts. He is a celebrated speaker and advocate for the arts. Fujimura was an Equity in Action Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania for the 2024-25 academic year.
